Fall Traditions: The Phoenix Beetlehouse

“If you act now, you get a free demon possession with every exorcism.” - Beetlejuice

Late last fall, I was walking my dog on our normal route and decided to extend it. The weather was so wonderful and I was enjoying the different Halloween displays house after house. That is how I found myself on East Earll Drive. Little did I know I was about to see a house that takes Halloween decorations to the next level... the Beetlehouse.

Located at 1423 E Earll Drive, owners Matt Wiley and Karen Altamirano have been setting up this elaborate display of scenes from the 80s classic, Beetlejuice, for five years. Each year, they try to add something on for those who have visited before.

Currently, the house has Beetlejuice's grave, a giant sand worm, the waiting room for the recently deceased, Barbara and Adam in their ghostly disguises and the Dante's Inferno sign. Let's not forget the demon of the hour, Beetlejuice himself also makes an appearance.

Not only is it a sight to be seen in the daytime, many of these features light up in the dark!

The owner's welcome folks to take pictures with their decorations and sometimes even feature them on their dedicated Instagram page, @azbeetlehouse. They say that their display is 100% interactive but they do ask visitors not to climb on their decorations, lest you get possessed by a perverted demon.

According to their bio, the couple has watched Tim Burton's 1988 film 167 times and they say it gets funnier every time. Which, in my opinion, is very true. Max and I like the movie so much, we saw the musical! We didn't feel each other up a la Lauren Boebert but did belly laugh and love each song.

The display is up until November 1st and the lights stay on nightly from 6 PM - 11 PM. So be sure to see it while it's still up!
